The giant redwood is the largest tree (and living organism) by volume on the planet. It is an evergreen conifer from California and, with its colossal stature, it can grow to a height of 50-85 m (160-280 ft) tall and a massive 6-8 m (20-26 ft) in diameter!
The largest living specimen of the tree is known as ‘General Sherman’, which is estimated to be around 3,200 years old, and is found within native forest in California standing at 84m (275 ft) in height, with a trunk circumference at ground level of 31m (103 ft)!
