Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax)

Fresh seeds of Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax).

With a distinctive growth habit, this evergreen perennial forms striking clumps of arching, sword-like leaves, growing 6 to 12 ft in height. Native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island, New Zealand Flax (also known as New Zealand Hemp) has been historically used by Maori peoples for traditional textiles.

The foliage is a key focal point, possessing a colour palette of vibrant green to golden yellow, with bronze hues. The long, narrow leaves exhibit a graceful arching form. During summer, tall flower spikes rise above the foliage, showcasing clusters of tubular, nectar-rich flowers, presenting a range from fiery reds and oranges to subtle yellows and greens, attracting pollinators and adding a dynamic dimension to the garden.

One of the notable characteristics of Phormium tenax is its adaptability to various garden conditions. It thrives in well-draining soil and is well-suited to coastal gardens, making it an ideal choice for landscaping projects near the sea.

RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Fully frost hardy to -15°C (5°F).

Please note: full germination instructions are printed on each pack.
