Dendrocalamus peculiaris (Giant Bamboo) |
An impressive, tall and upright, clump-forming bamboo (non-invasive) native to China. Growing to around 40-60 feet in height within its native provenance, it will typically reach up to 40 feet tall within temperate Europe.
The lighter green culms age to an attractive, shiny, deep-green, with hues of silver and blue.
With leaf blades eventually up to 30cm in length and culm diameter up to 15 cm, this is a real giant! The handsome, upright clumps form a beautiful, deep-green canopy of weeping foliage.
Even though some sources online will say this species can survive winter temperatures of -5°C, they don't really appreciate exposure to frost for any length of time — so winter protection using sheeting or a horticultural fleece is highly recommended.
This clumping species is also cultivated and harvested for its strong canes, frequently used within construction.
