A deciduous tree native to Eastern Asia, usually found growing at high elevations over 1,000 m above sea level

5-petalled and fragrant, pink flowers emerge on bare stems, weeks prior to leaves forming, during early to late spring (April to May within the UK) followed by yellow fruits

Growing to a maximum height of 6 m (20 ft) within open ground, it is also grown as a bonsai, where it will stay under 3-4 ft tall within a bonsai pot

Hardiness: -5°C / 23°F (within UK regions of colder summers) or -20°C / -4°F within southern areas of the UK experiencing the hottest summers; down as low as -28°C / -18°F within European regions that experience very long, hot summers

Chaenomeles sinensis 🌱 Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Place in a zip-lock bag with lightly-moist propagation compost or vermiculite, then refrigerate for 90 days, opening & shaking the bag daily for aeration. Sow 1cm deep within propagation compost. Keep at 20°C (68°F) and maintain moisture. A heated propagator is ideal. Non-heated propagators can be placed within direct sunlight in a warm room to trap in heat and humidity.
