Cercidiphyllum japonicum - (Katsura Tree) |
The Katsura tree is a deciduous broadleaf, medium-sized tree native to China and Japan, typically growing to 40-45ft (12-14m) in height (within approx. 25 years) under cultivation in the ground, although staying much smaller if grown within a pot, (under 3 feet as a bonsai)
Starting out a beautiful pink in the spring, the heart-shaped leaves turn to bright green in summer before various striking shades of yellow, orange, red and purple take over for the autumn, often with several colours overlapping. Interestingly, the autumn foliage can smell of burnt brown sugar, or candy floss, which adds to its appeal
The small and pretty pink flowers are borne on the trees before the leaves in the spring
The trees are easy to keep small (if desired) with pruning. These trees flower young
Makes an excellent bonsai tree as the roots are very shallow and it is easily dwarfed
Cercidiphyllum japonicum has the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM)
Please note: full germination instructions are printed on each pack
