Paulownia tomentosa - (Empress Foxglove Tree)

Native to China, this is one of the fastest-growing deciduous trees on the planet.  Combine that with the pure beauty and fragrance of the tree in flower, along with its architectural and exotic-looking large leaves, and it is a must-have in a any garden with space.

It grows between 8-12m (25-40 feet) tall with large heart-shaped to five-lobed leaves 15-40cm across.  Many gardeners cut back the tree to ground level at the end of each year, to keep under 2m in height, using the exotic-looking large leaves to great effect within a pot or amongst a border.

In late spring, the whole tree is covered with beautiful pink-lilac and fragrant flowers, each around 5cm long and shaped like foxglove flowers.

With their astonishing growth rate, Paulownia tomentosa trees are among the fastest growing trees on the planet, making them an attractive option for reforestation projects and sustainable timber production.

In addition to their rapid growth, they are also valuable for their ability to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making them an important tool in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Full hardy to -15°C (5°F)

This tree has been given the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit (AGM)
