A rare and beautiful species of Acer, only introduced to the UK in 1990 - with five-lobed leaves emerging deep purple and reds in the spring, turning green and then brilliant orange and scarlets in the autumn

The trees are easy to keep small (if desired) with pruning

Makes an excellent bonsai tree as the roots are very shallow and it is easily dwarfed

Propagation methods: From seed, and softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings

Acer elegantulum 🌱 Soak in water for 2 days. Place in a zip-lock bag with lightly-moist propagation compost or vermiculite. Keep at room temperature for 2 months, then refrigerate for further 2 months, opening & shaking bag daily for aeration. Finally sow 1cm deep within propagation compost at 20°C (68°F). Maintain moisture & bright conditions. Alternatively, sow directly outdoors within autumn, allowing frosts to break seed dormancy.
