Thyrsostachys siamensis - Giant Thai Monastery Bamboo |
A tall and upright, clumping bamboo (non-invasive), native to China, Thailand and Vietnam and other countries within South East Asia. Growing to around 20-40 feet in height within its native provenance, it will typically reach around 20 feet tall within temperate Europe.
New shoots start off purple, with the culms changing from green to yellow with age. The 5cm leaf blades are especially long and narrow within this species and eventually form a weeping canopy of dainty foliage which look lovely blowing in the wind.
Once established, clumps can survive temperatures of -4ºC (24ºF), but the key is to keep the soil on the dry side during any frost. Protect any bamboos under the age of 2-3 years old from any frost using sheeting or a horticultural fleece.
This clump-forming species is also cultivated and harvested for its strong canes, frequently used within construction within its native bamboo tree forests
Bamboo seeds are not always available due to worldwide shortages of most species; this is because they rarely flower, sometimes only every 30 to even 100 years (called gregarious flowering)
