| Phyllostachys nigra - (Black Bamboo) |
A tall, evergreen, clump-forming bamboo (within temperate climates) with beautiful canes starting off green, turning to a shiny chocolate-blackish-brown, with narrow-lanceolate leaves up to 12 cm in length.
Native to southern China.
This clumping bamboo has been given the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Can form a clump of up to 8-13 feet tall (2.5-4 m) within temperate Europe. Please note that within warmer regions of the world, they will eventually form some rhizome runners — and can even do so in cooler climates after they age, so tree root barriers can help keep the clumps stay more localised.
Hardy to around -15 to -10ºC (5-14ºF), sometimes colder, but the key is to keep the soil on the dry side during any frost.
Bamboo seeds are not always available due to worldwide shortages of most species; this is because they rarely flower, sometimes only every 30 to even 100 years (called gregarious flowering).
Please note: full germination instructions are printed on each pack.
