| Linaria purpurea ‘Canon Went’ (Purple Toadflax) |
Linaria purpurea ‘Canon Went’ (Purple Toadflax) is a striking, long-flowering hardy perennial, growing to 60-90 cm tall, that earns its keep in any cottage garden, wildlife border, or naturalistic planting scheme.
Known for its tall, delicate spires of rich maroon to soft pink two-lipped flowers that open progressively from the base upwards, it creates a long and reliable flowering display. ‘Canon Went’ is particularly valued for its strong colour saturation and improved garden presence, with its gentle grey-green foliage forming airy clouds that act as the perfect foil to the majestic flowers held above.
Flowering typically begins in late spring to early summer (June) and continues well into early autumn, especially if spent flower spikes are removed regularly, and seeds freely.
It is drought tolerant once established, making it ideal for gravel gardens, dry borders, and low-maintenance schemes. It will also gently self-seed in open ground, creating naturalistic drifts over time that look fantastic within prairie and meadow-style garden designs.
Pollinators are particularly fond of it, with bees regularly working the flower spikes throughout the season. Combined with its tall, see-through structure, it works well as a soft vertical accent plant among perennials and grasses.
