Acer mandshuricum (Manchurian Maple Tree) |
Acer mandshuricum, known as the Manchurian Maple, is a rare and exceptionally beautiful trifoliate maple native to China, Korea, and eastern Russia. This elegant small deciduous tree or large shrub typically grows 15-25 ft (4-8 m)tall, developing a graceful, spreading habit with smooth grey bark and fine branch structure.
Its distinctive three-part leaves emerge a soft rusty-red in spring, turning a rich green through summer with contrasting red petioles, before igniting into brilliant autumn colours of scarlet, orange, and crimson. Few trees (even some of the best Japanese maple/Acer palmatum cultivars) rival its fiery autumn display, which makes it a striking choice for ornamental gardens and arboretums alike.
In spring, small yellow-green flowers appear in clusters, followed by decorative, purple-brown winged seeds (samaras) that mature later in the season. Closely related to Acer triflorum and Acer griseum, the Manchurian Maple differs by having smooth bark rather than peeling or papery bark, giving it a clean, elegant appearance year-round.
Acer mandshuricum is fully frost hardy to -20°C. and prefers well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It’s ideal for gardeners seeking a rare, hardy ornamental maple with exceptional autumn colour and year-round appeal.
Please note: full germination instructions are printed on each pack.
