Fargesia gaolinensis (Syn. Borinda gaolinensis) - Umbrella Bamboo |
A recently discovered species from Yunnan, China
In 2012, Prof. Hongchao Tan of the Chinese Yunnan University, discovered the species at Gaolin within Songming County, Yunnan, China, growing at around 2,100 metres. Currently named Fargesia gaolinensis, it is thought to be very closely related to Fargesia songmingensis, which itself was only discovered in the same region, circa 2011
Clumping bamboo (non-invasive)
Growing to a height of 8-12 m (25-40 ft), with a typical culm diameter of 1-2 inches, they form an attractive tall clump of bamboo with dainty and weeping green leaves
Young culms usually start off yellow-green, aging to green-grey, green-black or chocolate-brown
Hardy to -12ºC (10ºF), or possibly -15ºC (5ºF). Some online sources may state -25ºC but this is currently unproven. Keep soil on the drier side during any frosts
Bamboo seeds are not always available due to worldwide shortages of most species; this is because they rarely flower, sometimes every 30 to even 100 years (called gregarious flowering)
Please note: full germination instructions are printed on each pack
