Chusquea gigantea- Striped Chile Bamboo |
We're very excited to offer the seeds of an extremely rare, clumping, giant bamboo, Chusquea gigantea. Full instructions for germination printed on packs.
A native species of Chile, it is a spectacularly beautiful evergreen and clump-forming bamboo, reaching an eventual height of around 15 m, although staying slightly smaller within the UK and temperate Europe.
Linear, blue-green leaves are 12 cm long and sit atop attractive, bright yellow-green, glossy culms, which have a mid-green band around the pronounced nodes — giving the canes a striped appearance.
Once established, clumps can survive temperatures of -5ºC (23ºF) and often lower, but the key is to keep the soil on the dry side during any frost. Protect any bamboos under the age of 2-3 years old from any frost using sheeting or a horticultural fleece.
This species is also cultivated and harvested for its eye-catching canes, which are used in the manufacture of furniture, flooring and building aesthetics.
Please note: full germination instructions are printed on each pack
